She said they would sit together on the sofa and he would put his arm around her and fluff his eyelashes down her cheek… It was as if she was hypnotised by him.

During his trial, Field admitted to drugging Farquhar with benzodiazepines and hallucinogens simply to "torment" him, telling the jury that he did it "for no other reason other than it was cruel, to upset and torment Peter – purely out of meanness". Now his shocking true story is set to be aired in a BBC One drama The Sixth Commandment starring Timothy Spall and Anne Reid. Before their romance, Farquhar wrote a novel, Between Boy and Man, which details a man coming to terms with both his homosexuality and his Christianity, which was heavily inspired by his personal experience teaching at a prestigious private school. During the court case, the jury heard how Mr Farquhar had a wide circle of friends but he was lonely and, as a gay man, he struggled with his sexuality, regarding it as incompatible with his Anglican faith. By being open and honest about chicanery, how unpleasant he’d been to Farquhar and Moore-Martin, the court and Jury wouldn’t question his sincerity regarding his claim that the murder story was simply a work of fiction. The descriptions of members of staff, of the use of IT, of Health and Safety regulations, of the involvement of Social Services and the police all illustrate problems and human nature in a way which will strike a responsive chord in anyone who has had anything to do with the English educational system, if that is the right word, whether as teacher, parent, pupil or simply as amused observer of the foibles of mankind. This is a powerful, well-written and well-plotted book, with lively and frank dialogue, and comic elements in among the serious points. Discussions of classical literature (as well as art and music) feature heavily in the book, including in the accounts of the university interviews, and the portrayal of the (fictional) school is plainly partly autobiographical and apparently highly authentic. The cover reproduces a famous, although unfamiliar to me, 17 th-century painting, “The Arcadian Shepherds” by Nicolas Poussin. Rebel Wilson and her fiancee Ramona Agruma hold hands as they head back to their hotel after partying until 2 a.

He achieved a first-class degree in English, which he later used to become an English teacher for over 30 years.Meanwhile, Farquhar, like Field, was recording his demise in a diary, in which he wrote, 'I wanted to die… I saw awful packs of hideous black insects' and told friends that he felt like Shakespeare’s King Lear living through his mental breakdown. The fact was Peter was a single man, who had never enjoyed intimate companionship, reaching his sixties with a lonely hole in the centre of his life. The thing was, Peter trusted Ben, Ben could do nothing wrong, even when he was doing everything wrong. The school authorities react with caution, forced to yield to the prevailing climate of political correctness, a phenomenon which is challenged elsewhere in the novel.
