the most baffling problem with this microphone, and why I at first thought it wasn't anything special: the foam windscreen it comes with, in my opinion, is not a good design and actually gives a bad first impression of this wonderful mic, at least to my ears and in the space I'm recording from. The microphone offers a wide range of frequency response, from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, which helps to capture the full range of sound in recordings. I’ve only ever encountered a similar mount on one other mic, an obscure Pearl model from the ’70s, and it’s a genius idea that deserves to be much more widely used. Foam Windscreen: By reducing noise from breaths and wind, the supplied foam windscreen helps you achieve clean vocal recordings. The Little Red Monster (LRM) is a large-diaphragm, multi-pattern tube condenser microphone influenced by the Neumann U 67. They see its accurate transient response, phase linearity, pure polar pattern and smooth off‑axis sound as being universal benefits that confer advantages in any recording or live context.

Recently, I was asked to record a private concert featuring acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Paul Cantelon (who is also an accomplished violinist and composer). Since November, I've been working on a huge shootout of small-diaphragm condenser mics; I might have mentioned this in my last review. The Earthworks ETHOS XLR is a Broadcasting condenser microphone with a Super Cardioid Polar Pattern. Based on Earthworks' reputation for building microphones with presence and clarity, the Ethos goes a step further, offering intimacy and warmth that matches any voice's sound while anticipating the sound engineer's needs.

This process has already yielded the stellar SV33 studio vocal mic, as well as the SR40V and SR314 stage mics and the ICON, a speech‑oriented mic available in XLR and USB variants. Other unique features of this microphone include a superbly transparent foam windshield and a Triad Orbit M2-R ball joint adapter, making the mic superbly easy to position with precision. Regardless, anyone looking to match a darker studio setup with an appropriate matte black mic will be significantly out of pocket. In audio, our perception of what feels real and natural is extremely sensitive to temporal resolution. You might lament the loss of the metal windscreen of the ICON; however, the ETHOS combines a thick foam windscreen with a multi-stage metal wind/pop filter. One minor irritation is the positioning of the XLR output, which is on the end of the microphone (just like an EV RE-20). With years of experience testing and reviewing technology products, Bruce has become a trusted voice in the tech industry. While it is common for broadcast mics to have cardioid polar patterns, the ETHOS features a supercardioid response, enabling more focused capture of your voice with less background noise. Besides the rotating mount, the only functional feature on the Ethos is the pin 2+ XLR port located at the rear.
