Description

The first is that it’s frustrating rather than funny to be the source of everyone else’s impatience.

Your goal is to get all four characters to their special equipment spaces, then get them out of the mall through the exits. Magic Maze is a cooperative real-time game where everyone collectively controls four characters: a Barbarian, Mage, Elf, and a Dwarf. As you can probably tell, I think this game creates incredible little moments and the fact that its so quick to set up and reset is key to making a frustrating event a funny and fast pace thrill. The limitations; firstly each player can only move the characters in a limited direction / with limited actions. I suppose it’s becoming more common to provide solitaire components in game boxes, but it was still a surprise to find these tiles. In a turn based game where you have the luxury of time it would be bad enough, but here every second you spend is genuinely wasted.

It would be one thing if you could all talk about what it was that was needed – but the problem here it’s often not just the means that you don’t see, but the overall goal. However, if the Sand Timer runs out at any moment during gameplay, the Guards have rumbled your schemes and it’s off to jail, or a dungeon, or the guillotine. There’s a number of other small rules about the dwarf moving through certain low arches, the wizard seeing the future tiles, and the barbarian smashing TV cameras – but these are pasted on for complexity and a smidgen more theme. In Scenario 2, you’ll use all four Exit Tiles (one in each pawn’s color), and each pawn must exit through the exit matching its color (and symbol). The Dwarf will be able to pass through small passages that no one else can; the Elf allows players to talk when he explores; the Mage can add two new tiles anywhere in the mall; and the Barbarian is able to turn off security cameras, which are found on new tiles that you’ll use from Scenario 7 onward. The numbers in the bottom right corner of each Action Tile correspond to how many people are playing the game (for instance in a four-player game each player gets exactly one Action Tile, these are labelled 3. Place each Hero Pawn on their corresponding Item Space; depicted by the identical symbol and colour of each Hero. So suspending disbelief (which in fairness all games require), you now have your four characters, you each have your unique actions and you know that somewhere in the expanding maze are your weapons. side up is easy for beginners and 1B is for those who’ve played a game or two - Feel free to choose whichever).
