Shannon skillfully grounds high-stakes fantasy action in human emotion and a mature exploration of duty, bodily autonomy, identity, and motherhood. Glorian was my favourite character, and I was constantly flipping between being worried about her and wanting to hug her, to being astonished at how brave and fierce this 17 year old is!

I’ve always enjoyed the simple idea of ‘what if both existed’, which the Priory-verse explores, and it works well here too. Alternate covers, sprayed edges, foil details, and decorated endpapers are just a few of our favorite things. Sabran: Gloriana, I sacrificed myself and married your father (yes he is the hottest man alive and worships the ground I walk on) but that is beside the point. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. There are characters in this book who love being mothers and everything that comes with it, others who fear it, others who resent the expectation of it, and so many thoughts in between. It’s up to each leader to find the best way to defeat these dreadful beasts before everything lies in ruin. However, at the end of the day, the characters won me over, perhaps some of them even more so than the OG characters in The Priory. As someone who is childfree by choice and has known I would be from the earliest I can ever remember having a coherent thought on the matter, A Day of Fallen Night made me feel so seen. The three lead protagonists represent each major region of the world—East, West, and South—which have very different religions, political structures, and cultures.

Simply put, Samantha Shannon hasn't just done it again, she's surpassed all that has come before and cemented herself as a legend of the genre. Ordinarily, the reader would then be treated to several chapters of them out scheming the opposition in turn. Characters and myths are shared across books, and I think the prior knowledge I had of the world from Priory enhanced my enjoyment of this book. There is teenage princess Glorian, young warrior Wulf, newly discovered princess Dumai and experienced mage Tunuva. When I wrote Priory, I originally intended it to be a one-off standalone, but the longer I sat with it, the more I came to realise that this world had a much larger story to tell. Intricate and epic, A Day of Fallen Night sweeps readers back to the world of A Priory of the Orange Tree , showing us a course of events that shaped it for generations to come. our characters were easy to care for and therefore you found yourself rooting for their journey from the start. Rather than sequencing chapters to help build momentum or reinforce certain aspects of the story, the alternating perspectives give the novel a disjointed feel, compromising the flow of the story.

It is lush forests and desolate plains, ravaged by the ice of the North and the sun of the South, it boasts so many fascinating geographies, civilisations, religions and cultures. It’s set just shy of five centuries before Priory and covers the period known as the Great Sorrow, or Grief of Ages. In A Day of Fallen Night, Samantha Shannon sweeps readers back to the universe of Priory of the Orange Tree and into the lives of four women, showing us a course of events that shaped their world for generations to come. Wulfert Glenn, a foundling and housecarl sworn to Glorian’s father, the king of Hróth, struggles to cast off whispers of witchcraft that cling to him from his mysterious past. Whilst I fell in love with many of these characters there was just too many to fully appreciate them all and quite a few added little to the overall story.I have always adored the careful balance of this world's magic system and was delighted to see so much magic throughout the different perspectives.
