I managed to read it all the way through but gradually becoming more and more amazed at it's popularity - characters ok, story aspects ranging from poor to ok, dialogue barely ok, For me two things make a book good - do I want to read to the end and does it make me think. The story of a family of West End gangsters of Irish descent in 1960s post-war London, and the secret love affair between Maura, who rises to become one of the leading gangsters of her day, and Terry Patterson, a policeman.

Maura Ryan was the queen of the criminal underworld when she pulled off the most audacious gold bullion robbery of all time. Dangerous Lady grabs hold of you from the start and you can't help but be engrossed in the story, unaware of the hours passing by. The only real negative is I found Cole’s use of foreboding a bit too obvious and forefront in the earlier chapters as there is quite a few chapters which end saying a character will live to regret what they have done. It’s an amazing look at how the influence of family and society can shape a girl from toddler through to teen and adulthood.

I am looking forward to reading the sequel and I have also downloaded four other Cole novels which I cant wait to get started on! No one thinks a seventeen year old girl can take on the hard men of London's gangland, but its a mistake to underestimate Maura Ryan: she's tough, clever and beautiful - and she's determined that nothing will stand in her way. The life and times of one of London's top crime families starting from the birth of the youngest Ryan and the only girl of the family Maura to her first love and how she became the most dangerous woman in London.

The police are determined to put away Maura once and for all – and not everyone in the family think that’s such a bad idea. Despite this being predominantly a crime novel, I loved the way that the family saga was wound and weaved into the story. I love reading her books because I just don't want to put them down and you never know what to expect.

But it’s also a fascinating insight into how one event can change the whole course of your future, whether good or bad. I will read one of Cole's recent novels to see whether her youth when writing Dangerous Lady explains some of the weaknesses - I am just amazed (based on reading Dangerous Lady) how massively successful Cole's novels are. With her numerous brothers Maura Ryan just wants to get on with her life, but she never really had a choice, so when faced with the realisation of her reality, takes to a life of crime like a duck to water, emerging as a very dangerous lady.

Martina Cole is the acknowledged queen of crime drama with more than twenty novels to her name, of which over a dozen have been No. Maura (Maws) and Michael (Mickey) are fabulous characters along with all the other Brothers, Mum and Dad etc.At first they are found unscathed, but when one meets a dark end DI Kate Burrows knows the clock is ticking. The Take was serialised on British television on Sky1 in June 2009, which starred Tom Hardy as Freddie. The 'Family' as they are seem 'real' and you can think of yourself as being in the thick of all the incidents that occur. What Maura goes through in the beginning with her policeman boyfriend then realising that she wants the relationship to continue but he dumps her as she is a Ryan ! This was the first vehicle in which I remember seeing Jason Isaacs and his treatment of his character left a lasting impression on me.
