About this deal

The DAC X6 (high biased, opamp rolled) is a brilliant piece of budget hifi. I love it. The combo with the modded T50RP represents absolutely stunning value. To conclude, the FX-Audio DAC-X6 is an impressive headphone AMP and DAC, that noticeably improves sound quality. If you are looking for a budget AMP and DAC for headphones, the DAC-X6 is a brilliant choice. As for other noise(s); I've not noticed anything. This, at least, suggests to me that the DAC-X6 isn't particularly sensitive to computer generated interference, via USB. I will be using this unit on my other PC so I am ok with keeping it. I will update and/or give a more lengthy review in the future..

I've got another 'proper' rig, for my 'serious' listening. This dac-amp combo is just for computer media usage; mainly films, series, youtube etc. I would normally just plug straight into the laptop, for this. But the laptop's sound has a problem (thankfully only in the analogue domain). I have to use USB audio, now.Am I disappointed? Well yes and no. This is a nice AMP/Dac and for the price that I paid for it is very nice with the features and inputs. But it is not powerful enough especially for the stated specs. Maybe I will try the Monoprice DAC/Amp that states the power is about 900mw / 32Ω if I recall correctly. For a budget AMP/DAC of course. Good to hear all of your opinions of the X6 here. For a newbie like me, it's certainly comforting to know that I'm hearing what others are hearing.

Switching to Hifiman HE-400i headphones, most of the differences went away. After listening for a while, I could still hear some improvement from the DAC-X6 but clearly this is a less demanding headphone than the HD-650 is. It is also more comfortable to wear. There are two analog outputs, one line level that is fixed and the other, on the front going through a headphone amplification stage. The knob controls the level of headphone output. Yeah; this is a mains powered amp (rather than usb, or battery), that's one of the factors why I chose it. This is surely the (most) correct category.

GLASS CPUs ARE COMING.

The X6 comes with an OPA2134 opamp. I liked it so very much, that I felt silly switching in the LME49860 that arrived today by China Mail. I think I paid 2.30USD for it. (Keeping it real here, no snake oil extravaganza at these prices.) I felt silly, because the sonic balance of the OPA2134 (in combination with my modded T50RP) was so on point, that I couldn't really fathom how it good get any better.

FX-Audio DAC-X6 MKII review – Is This A New Budget King?

Could I immediately hear a difference going from onboard audio to the DAC-X6? Honestly, I couldn’t. I felt like I wasted my money… Front panel buttons are old fashioned toggle switches but they have a solid, reassuring feel. There is an on/off switch which I like and a button for selecting one of the three inputs. FX-Audio DAC-X6 MKII follows the suite of its predecessor by using a sturdy aluminum case with a brushed finish. It grew in size, however, probably to accommodate the new BT feature. Given the asking price, I’m still as impressed with the build as I was with the original one. The Fostex did not and does not fare well on either dac amps. It is loud... BUT not loud enough. No oomph in the bass for example with both amps/dacs. The fostex does shine on my Yamaha home receiver. I listened to the line output of the DAC-X6 against the Topping D30 through my Stax SRM-007t headphone amp driving their "Pro" headphones. Going through my playlist, I could not detect any obvious differences. But if I squinted enough, I thought the Topping sounded better. See the frequency response measurements for possible reason. On the other hand, its physical build is far better than the Fiio E10 and even Topping D30. And its headphone output which never gets distorted regardless of its dial position, is able to drive difficult headphones like the Sennheiser HD650. Layering is good and the sound-stage is respectably wide, but the upfront presentation doesn’t convey much depth. That’s perfectly fine in my book as no device near this price can’t really do much stage depth either. I kept at it and after a few careful listening sessions with music I know intimately, a few things became apparent. First, there was more bass, like it just sounded fuller. And yet, the additional bass did not overwhelm or bleed into the mids or highs. Second, the bass sounded crisper, like a drumbeat would be more precise with defined beginning and ending of the beat. For example, in A Thousand Kisses Deep, the clarity of both the male and female vocals is exceptional and its easy to hear the words both are singing. A bit on testing – I used 320 Kbps FLAC files for audio, played through MusicBee. My headphones, the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pros have a V shaped sound curve, with slightly recessed mids and higher treble and bass, meaning that they are quite bright headphones.

That response is very poor in high frequencies, dropping from 5 Khz on by as much as 5 to 7 dB. We should see a rule flat output. So better pair this with rather bright headphones to compensate. I'd like to say that the FX6 Dac/Amp is more comparable in power to 200mw / 32Ω like the FiiO E10k and not as stated in the specs for the product that has it showing as 910mw / 32Ω! DAC X6 is a bit rough around the edges but not that far behind really. This makes the X6 useless to my home setup. Still, I will just relocate it to work, where I can't use speakers anyway. If anyone is looking to buy the X6 and use with powered speakers, keep this in mind. Note at this point that my inventory for comparison is rather limited so take this with a grain of salt. So my comparison is against the Benjie K9, Galaxy Note 5 and Sound Blaster Recon3d.
